Birchbox: Why I loved her and why we had to break up

Posted in Beauty, Lifestyle

{How beautiful is this box design? It was the Rifle Paper Co.’s curated box and I still keep it to this day in a place of honor.  It’s just too beautiful to part with.}

Let’s start this story way back when…

It was May 2010 and my thoughtful sister got me a birthday gift she knew I would love: a one year subscription to an exciting monthly box of goodies!  I eagerly completed the online beauty profile and couldn’t wait to receive my first box!  Every month I would receive 4-5 product samples along with fun cards, the occasional chocolate treat, and interesting write-ups from different company’s curated boxes.  I was so excited every month when my Birchbox arrived.  The box itself was adorable and always packaged perfectly.  And the samples introduced me to facial, hair, and makeup products I had never heard of before, let alone thought of trying.  All in all, for someone who is far from knowledgeable in the new trends and companies that fill this arena, I was getting quite an education in beauty 101.  If all this sounds amazing to you, then Birchbox might be just what you need to up your style game!

The 5 reasons I loved her (pretty sure my Birchbox was a woman….)

  1. She allowed me to experiment with things I never thought to try before.  Plum colored eye liner? It might have been my thing!  Long story short….it wasn’t my thing and I looked like I had a black eye on more than one occasion.  You can’t blame a girl for trying! Birchbox was all about trying new things.  Some worked out, too.  Much to my surprise, using a dark brown eyebrow pencil really helped to define my brows and give me a polished look.  How had I made it 30 some years without trying an eyebrow pencil?!?
  2. She was cheap.  $10 a month seemed like a steal of a deal.  On top of that, if you wrote reviews for the products you received each month, you could earn points that could be used toward discounts on future purchases.  I am nothing if not budget conscience, so I religiously wrote reviews for each and every product I received.  I always used my points toward full sized versions of the products I loved.
  3. She took the time to get to know me.  Birchbox attempts to customize your boxes based on your beauty and style profile.  I always felt the need to be a bit adventurous and would check boxes for things describing a love of new trends and my need to try out inventive products.
  4. She introduced me to multiple products that I can’t live without to this very day.  There are 6 products I would credit Birchbox with introducing me to and they are all on my list of must haves!  Check them out below.  They are all amazing.  Trust me on this one…I received roughly 250+ samples during my “relationship” with Birchbox and these are the best of the best.
  5. She delivered beauty products in pretty packages to my doorstep.  What doesn’t sound amazing about that?Screen Shot 2016-04-25 at 10.26.13 PM

Products I Can’t Live Without

*Follow the links to see the products through Birchbox or other retailers!  *Just an FYI: this post contains some affiliate links.

  1. Hot Mama Shadow and Blush – Seriously the best cheek color ever!  One of Birchbox’s best selling products and for good reason.  The peachy pink color has a light golden shimmer to give that, “You’re glowing!” effect.  Can also be found here.
  2. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray – Run out and buy this immediately!  We all love the fact that second (make that third) day hair is possible thanks to the dry shampoo trend and this is the best one out there.  It gives your hair texture and hold and creates volume for people like me who thought their hair was going to be flat forever.  Find it here as well.
  3. Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner in Black – Up until receiving this product, I was a strictly pencil eyeliner kind of a woman. Liquid eyeliner was so scary!  Who has that steady of a hand?  This liquid eyeliner is so easy to apply that even a novice like me found it foolproof.  Also available here.
  4. Rifle Paper Co. Products – I had heard of this company, but never knew where to get their products.  I was addicted to buying notepads and weekly desk pads like this adorable one shown above.  How did I go so long without knowing the beauty that is Rifle Paper Co.?  I have linked three of my other favorite Rifle products for you: recipe box, notepad, and floral garland.
  5. Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Pink –  The perfect subtle lip color when you want to look put together, but not too done up.  You can also buy it here.
  6. Stila All Over Shimmer Luminizer in Bronze – This product is no longer available through Birchbox, but can be purchased directly through Stila’s website.  It is a liquid shimmer that you can apply to highlight cheekbones or other areas like your décolletage.  It gives you a radiant glow!

And the 3 reasons we broke up:

  1. We grew apart.  I started to receive boxes full of products that were probably awesome, but once you receive your tenth sample of bb cream or conditioning shampoo, it starts to lose its luster.  I was eager to try new things, but many of the samples I received were simply a different company’s version of products I had already tried.
  2. I got bored.  As a result of number 1, I wasn’t as excited to receive my box every month.  I was always hopeful that it would have new makeup samples or the surprise larger size products, but often felt disappointed by the travel size shampoos and single use make-up samples.  How can I tell if this is the color for me if I only use it once?
  3. She got clingy.  If there is one thing to learn about me from this post, it is that I can be a bit OCD.  I felt like I had to use each and every product sample until it was empty before I could toss it.  Even the ones I didn’t really like!  I told myself that if I was paying $10 for this, then I was going to get my money’s worth.  Well, there I was, knee deep in samples that I didn’t really want to try and didn’t know how to walk away from.  Not pretty.  So, we parted ways.  After 5 years together, I broke up with Birchbox.  She taught me a lot and I will be forever grateful for the time we spent together.  Who knows? She might be just the girl you are looking for!

Do I have closure on this relationship?  No.  I just can’t say goodbye completely.  There is too much history there.  Like the old boyfriend you still follow on Facebook just to see what he’s up to, I still receive weekly Birchbox emails.  I just want to check in, you know, see what she’s up to.
